2nd Grade 4th Quarter Newsletter
English Language Arts
Students will continue working on the Illinois Common Core Reading and Language standards throughout the fourth quarter. We will continue to review text-features in nonfiction texts. Students will continue working in their book clubs on various reading strategies, fluency, and comprehension skills. Students will have assignments and assessments that measure their understanding of the specific skill, as well as their ability to apply the skill, while reading new texts and passages. We will work on writing opinion, narrative, and ‘how to’ pieces throughout the quarter. Students will have spelling and phonics tests at the end of each Fundations Unit.

Math
We will spend the rest of the 4th quarter focusing on 4-digit addition and subtraction with regrouping. We will also be studying symmetry, perimeter, area, and angles to help readily prepare students for 3rd grade.
Science
Students will study insects and plants as well as their life cycles. We will focus on ‘close reads’ and answering comprehension questions about selected topics. Students will also learn about these topics through books and activities. Additionally, we will also study and celebrate Earth Day. Students will conduct a variety of STEM activities that connect to NGSS (next generation science standards) throughout the 4th quarter.
Social Studies
We will study landforms, bodies of water, and simple machines through books, teaching videos, and activities. We will be studying and celebrating Cinco de Mayo.
Health
For health, the students will study the five senses. The students will work on ‘close reads’, complete diagrams and charts, and study new vocabulary words.
Field Trips
TBD
Absent Procedures
In the situation that your child may be absent, he or she may make-up missed work. Please keep in mind that a huge part of the school day involves instruction that cannot be recreated in the form of a worksheet. Students need to be present or they are missing valuable learning opportunities that take place throughout the day. We understand that students get sick and emergencies happen, therefore we try to send work that relates to activities in class, but that is not always possible. When it is possible, the work will be collected and put in the child’s mailbox or absent folder when he/she returns to school. The student will have two days, for every day missed, to complete the assignments and turn them in. Please do not send requests for missed work to the office, thank you.
Class Picnic
We will celebrate the end of the year with a 2nd grade class picnic at Cassell School, more information to follow.
Thank you,
Mrs. Voegel & Mrs. Wiseman
